Water supply at Masalani town in Ijara Sub- County of Garissa has been disconnected after the Garissa County Government failed to pay Kenya Power accrued electricity bill of Sh600,000.
Speaking to KNA, the Sub- County Water Coordinator, Sadam Qarad, assured area residents that the bill will be cleared by next week.
However, Mr Qarad said that at the moment the Sub- County is using a diesel driven engine to pump water from the intake to the main water supply for purifying and pumping to the six elevator tanks within the town before distribution.
Qarad regretted that despite the effort the water is still insufficient to cater for the town residents.
The coordinator added that the population in the town has expanded and the water crisis will be over once a Sh50 million World Bank funded water project being undertaken in the area is complete.
Mr Qarad appealed to consumers to pay their monthly bills on time, noting that two third of the population do not pay the water bills.
County Chief Officer for Water Ahmed Abdirahman, asked water coordinator to create a mobile phone pay bill for customers to pay bills and to always remind them through SMS on the need to pay in time to avoid disconnection.
Abdirahaman promised to ensure normal water supply resumes in the area as soon as possible.
