A woman from Meru County has been given a new lease of life after successfully undergoing a complex eight-hour surgery at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) to treat a rare and life-threatening thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm.
Ms. Judith Karwitha was discharged from the hospital on July 30, 2026, just 10 days after the operation, pain-free and in stable condition following months of severe abdominal pain that had disrupted her daily life.
According to KNH, Karwitha had endured persistent abdominal pain radiating to her back for nearly a year before seeking specialized treatment. After a series of medical assessments, doctors diagnosed her with a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm, a dangerous enlargement of the body’s main artery extending through the chest and abdomen.
The condition weakens the wall of the aorta and, if left untreated, can rupture without warning, causing severe internal bleeding and possible death. It is commonly associated with hypertension, atherosclerosis, connective tissue disorders, and ageing.
A multidisciplinary team led by cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Joseph Mutie performed an open graft repair on July 20, 2026. The highly specialized procedure, regarded as the gold standard for treating thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms, took approximately eight hours and involved cardiothoracic surgeons, anesthesiologists, theatre nurses, critical care specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
The hospital described the surgery as a success, attributing the positive outcome to careful planning, teamwork, and the expertise of the medical team.
Hospital officials commended all staff involved for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to delivering quality patient-centred care.
For Karwitha and her family, the successful operation represents more than a medical milestone. It offers renewed hope after months of pain, uncertainty, and fear caused by a condition that could have turned fatal without timely intervention.
The case also underscores the importance of early diagnosis and access to specialized healthcare services. Hospital officials noted that advanced treatment at referral facilities plays a critical role in managing complex medical conditions and supports the country’s efforts to achieve Universal Health Coverage by ensuring Kenyans can access life-saving care when needed.
As she returns home to Meru County to continue her recovery, Karwitha expressed gratitude to the medical team for restoring her health and giving her another chance at life.
