Gathoni Wamuchomba, the Member of Parliament for Githunguri, has officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for modern student hostels at Githunguri Technical and Vocational College (TVC), marking a major milestone in the national government’s Affordable Housing Programme.
The MP, representing the Ministry of Housing, performed the symbolic groundbreaking at the college site in Mariigi, emphasizing that the project is fully funded by the national government with all resources readily available. She stressed the importance of timely completion and warned the contractor against any delays or excuses.
“This is a national government project, and funds are all available. There will be no excuse for the project to delay,” Hon. Wamuchomba declared during the event.
The development comprises 590 housing units, each designed to accommodate two students, providing capacity for up to 1,180 learners. Additional facilities include a dedicated parking area, shades for outdoor use, a borehole to ensure reliable water supply, and a secure perimeter wall on one side to enhance safety and privacy.
The hostels are expected to be handed over by April next year, providing improved accommodation to support the growing student population at the institution and promote conducive learning environments.
Wamuchomba highlighted broader economic benefits, noting that construction will create numerous job opportunities for local youth at the site. She added that the project is likely to attract traders who will set up businesses selling food and other essentials to workers and students, boosting local commerce and livelihoods.
The initiative aligns with efforts to integrate student accommodation into the Affordable Housing Programme, addressing accommodation challenges in technical institutions while stimulating economic activity in surrounding communities.
Residents and education stakeholders in Githunguri have welcomed the development as a timely intervention that will ease pressure on existing facilities and contribute to youth empowerment through employment during construction.
With the project now underway, attention turns to swift execution to meet the April 2027 handover target, ensuring students benefit from modern, secure housing in the near future.
