Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), in partnership with global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, is working towards strengthening cancer care and medical innovation.
MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa underscored the critical role played by global partnerships in transforming patients’ healthcare.
“Partnerships with global pharmaceutical companies are not just beneficial—they are essential in supporting our efforts to improve patient care, particularly in specialized areas such as cancer treatment,” said Dr. Kirwa.
The CEO noted that the engagement would open new spheres for collaboration that will directly impact the lives of patients, many of whom he said travel from across the region to access MTRH services.
Dr. Kirwa made the remarks when he received Dr. Albert Bourla, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, who paid a visit to the facility.
Dr. Kirwa underscored the potential for joint initiatives in medical research, innovation, and capacity building, noting that such collaborations would accelerate the adoption of advanced healthcare technologies and essential medicines.
The MTRH CEO noted that the visit underscored a shared vision between the public health sector and global pharmaceutical companies to advance cancer care, medical research, and access to essential medicines.
Dr. Kirwa informed that MTRH is one of Kenya’s largest referral hospitals and continues to position itself as a regional hub for specialized care, with oncology and pathology among its flagship services.
He stressed that the hospital’s leadership remains committed to forging strategic alliances that enhance its capacity to deliver world-class healthcare.
Dr. Bourla said that the visit is marking a significant step in deepening the company’s partnership with Kenya’s healthcare sector.
Pfizer CEO reaffirmed the company’s dedication to advancing healthcare across Africa, highlighting the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing some of the continent’s most pressing health challenges.

“Our visit here is a testament to Pfizer’s commitment to working alongside Kenyan healthcare leaders to expand access to life-saving treatments, foster medical innovation, and ensure that no patient is left behind in the fight against cancer and other serious illnesses,” he emphasized.
