Traders operating in Homa Bay Town’s Koginga beach modern fish market have asked the county government to address drainage problems at the new facility.
This follows revelation that over the past two days, the market has been clogged, due to heavy downpour being experienced in the area.
The over 500 traders moved into the market, constructed at a cost of Sh352 million, barely two months ago.
The traders are now complaining that the facility is prone to floods, whenever there was downpour, mainly because of its poor drainage system.
One of the traders at the market, Grace Auko, decried constant business disruptions, adding, “We cannot fry fish when it’s raining as the fire gets extinguished.”
The traders said water from the roof catchment should be guttered, noting that even after the rains subside, stagnant waters continue to cover the open area that is used to fry fish.
At times, the affected traders are forced to use buckets to draw out stagnant water. “This has a long term effect on the local economy,” said Auko.
One of the officials at the market, Rose Langa, said the space they operate from is quite small and traders are struggling with congestion.
“We are likely to suffer more if the county government fails to take act immediately,” she
said.
