Orange Democratic Movement Party(ODM) leader Raila Odinga has called on Kenyans to maintain peace and shun divisive politics that could lead the country to anarchy.
Speaking in Ilpolei, Laikipia county during the burial of the former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel, the former prime minister called for tolerance among Kenyans, aimed to fostering development.
“Before anything else, we must be united because if we don’t , our country will be destroyed and will head the Somali way. That’s why I had to focus on putting the country in the right direction, we have to avoid divisive politics,” he said.
The ODM leader promised that historical land injustices among the Maa community would be addressed and those who have been affected since pre-colonial period get justice.
At the same time, Odinga urged for speedy investigation into the incident, where the former MP was involved in a hit and run accident .
“That person who killed Lempurkel must be arrested, it’s a great loss for us. He fought for the rights of Maa,” said Odinga, who mourned the deceased as an astute champion for the Maasai people.
Other leaders accompanying Odinga included ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, Kajiado governor Joseph Ole Lenku, Laikipia governor Joshua Irungu among other elected leaders, who hailed Lempurkel for his firmness in fighting for the rights of the Maa community including land injustices.
Lempurkel who was elected as the first MP from the area through ODM ticket, passed away on August 24, days after he was critically injured following a tragic road accident in Ongata Rongai, Nairobi.
He has left behind a widow, Judith Naitoti Lempurkel and four children, who all mourned him as a devoted father.
