Sacred Heart celebrations in Kericho renew call to Christ’s love

Hundreds of Catholic faithful dressed in red attire streamed into Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Kericho to celebrate the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a major feast in the Catholic liturgical calendar that commemorates the boundless love, mercy, and compassion of Jesus Christ for humanity.

Dressed predominantly in red, the colour associated with the love and sacrifice of Christ, hundreds of Catholic faithful filled the Cathedral Parish in Kericho for the solemn celebration.

Members of the Apostolate of the Sacred Heart; church associations; youth groups; women’s and men’s organizations; and families participated prayerfully in the liturgy, creating a vibrant atmosphere of faith and devotion.

The celebration, presided over by Parish Priest Fr. Gerald Nyangate began with a solemn Eucharistic celebration during which hundreds of faithful participated in prayers, hymns, and the Holy Mass, renewing their devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The devotion occupies a special place in Catholic spirituality and calls believers to contemplate Christ’s sacrificial love revealed through his passion, death, and resurrection.

In his homily, Fr. Nyangate said the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart invites Christians to reflect on God’s immeasurable love for humanity as manifested through his Son, Jesus Christ.

“The Sacred Heart reminds us that God loved the world so much that He gave His Only Son for our salvation. It is a heart pierced for our sins yet overflowing with mercy, forgiveness, and compassion. As Christians, we are called to respond to that love through faith, obedience to God’s commandments, and service to one another,” he said.

Fr. Nyangate explained that devotion to the Sacred Heart is inseparable from the mystery of the Holy Eucharist, through which Catholics encounter the real presence of Christ and draw strength for their spiritual journey.

“The Eucharist is the living presence of Christ among us. Every time we participate in the Holy Mass, we encounter the same love that flowed from the heart of Jesus on Calvary. The Sacred Heart calls us to approach the sacraments with faith and reverence,” Fr. Nyangate told the congregation.

He urged the faithful to deepen their relationship with Christ through regular participation in the sacraments, particularly the Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, noting that authentic devotion to the Sacred Heart should lead to conversion of heart and a greater commitment to Christian living.

Fr. Nyangate further challenged Christians to become witnesses of Christ’s love within their families, workplaces, and communities by promoting peace, forgiveness, justice, and solidarity with the poor, the sick, and those facing various challenges in society.

“The world needs hearts that resemble the Heart of Jesus. We are called to be instruments of peace, agents of reconciliation and servants of the common good. Genuine devotion to the Sacred Heart must be reflected in how we treat our neighbours and how we uphold the dignity of every human person,” he said.

During the celebration, the faithful participated in special prayers and acts of consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, entrusting their families, the parish, the Diocese of Kericho, and the nation to Christ’s loving care. Special intentions were also offered for priests, religious vocations, peace in the country, and unity among families.

The Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is one of the most cherished celebrations in the Catholic Church. The devotion gained prominence through the revelations received by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in the seventeenth century and continues to inspire Catholics worldwide to embrace Christ’s love and mercy through prayer, charity, and faithful participation in the sacramental life of the Church.

After the Holy Mass, the congregation gathered for a joyous celebration featuring sacred music, choir presentations, religious dances, and other performances by various parish groups.

The activities reflected the unity of the Church community and provided an opportunity for the faithful to express their gratitude and joy while strengthening bonds of fellowship.

Speaking after the celebration, Mary Chepkemoi, a parishioner, said the feast had renewed her faith and strengthened her commitment to Christian values.

“The celebration was spiritually enriching. It reminded us that as Christians we are called to reflect the love of Christ through forgiveness, unity, and service to others. The entertainment also brought the parish community together in a joyful expression of faith,” she said.

The event concluded with the faithful reaffirming their commitment to live according to the Gospel and to imitate the virtues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus through acts of love, mercy, humility, and service to humanity.
