State begins work rehabilitating Thika Stadium

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), under the Ministry of Defence, have commenced preparations for the full-scale upgrading of Thika Stadium in Kiambu County.

The project is a joint effort with the Kiambu County Government, steered by Governor Kimani Wamatangi, and is being executed as directed by President William Ruto.

The planned upgrade will concentrate on reinforcing the stadium’s facilities, improving amenities for athletes, and enhancing the overall experience for spectators.

Upon completion, the stadium is set to become a modern centre for sports development, talent nurturing, and community engagement across Kiambu County and the surrounding regions.

Dr. Patrick Mariru, Principal Secretary for Defence, initiated the modernisation drive by conducting a site inspection of the stadium. His goal was to assess its current state and pinpoint the key areas requiring urgent improvement.

This inspection launches the joint venture between the National and County Governments aimed at bringing the facility up to modern standards.

Speaking during the inspection on Thursday, Dr. Mariru reiterated the Government’s dedication to providing high-quality public sports facilities, stressing that these investments are vital for empowering youth and fostering healthy, active communities.

“As a ministry we will execute the project with utmost competence while operating within a set timeframe. Sports facilities are essential, as they provide safe and accessible spaces for physical activity in today’s busy world. We want to encourage healthy lifestyles by giving people opportunities to exercise regularly in order to reduce lifestyle-related illnesses and improve their mental well-being,” he spoke.

On his part, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication in Kiambu County Ali Osman Korar, who accompanied the PS highlighted the importance of strong cross-government co-ordination to ensure effective project delivery and talent development.

“Sports venues create pathways for competitions and exposure, giving talented youth opportunities to be recognised and advance to higher levels. Overall, they form the foundation on which athletic talent is discovered, shaped and elevated. This is why the upgrade of Thika Stadium is a significant investment in the future of our youth and the sporting culture of Kiambu County,” said Korar.

The Ministry of Defence expressed its commitment to collaborating closely with Governor Wamatangi’s administration and all stakeholders in a collective effort aimed at ensuring the successful realisation of transforming Thika Stadium into a modern, world-class sports facility.
