Fourteen Kapsabet Boys High School students who scored a mean grade of A plain of 84 points during 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education have won a two-day mentorship trip program to Mombasa sponsored by Lake Victoria North Water Development Agency.
Agency Director Abraham Cheruyoit revealed that during the Agency’s mentoring tour in Kapsabet Boys last year, they committed to airlift any KCSE candidate who will score a mean grade of A plain of 84 points to Mombasa for a two-day mentorship training.
He said after the agency’s motivation talk in Kapsabet Boys last year, 14 students scored straight As of 84 points this being a big improvement from 2023 KCSE where the school managed only 5 students with A plain of 84 points.
“So, we are here to fulfil our promise by ensuring the 14 students who scored our target marks are taken to Mombasa on behalf of others,” Cheruiyot told the 14 best performers.
The Director said Lake Victoria North Water Development Agency started a students’ mentorship program in 2023 within six counties where it operates as a way of preparing young people while joining higher institutions of learning and also enlighten them on how to cope with life after college.
“We have realised that if they are brought together and talked to especially on how to use social media responsibly. It’ll save their future and career,” he said.
Cheruiyot said the Agency looks forward to expanding membership to more than 15 counties so that they can bring more students for mentorship training. “We have gone to many schools in North Rift for instance; Salvation Army Matunda, and St. Anne, Songolia Day Secondary School in Nandi for students’ mentorship,” he added
Cheruyoit said other state corporations like Kenya Industrial Estate, Kenya Seed, and Lake Basin Development Authority have shown interest in mobilizing resources to bring thousands of students into mentorship arrangements.
He noted that they also offer scholarships to young learners from poor backgrounds to enable them continue with their education.
“As an agency we have also realized that if we don’t educate these young people, and mentor them, we’ll not have reliable people especially the engineers who are strong and can make sound, working decisions for the organizations they will be working for,” he noted
A teacher cum 2024 Form Four Class Coordinator at Kapsabet Boys Ezekiel Kipchumba said that the school had realised there was a gap between high school and tertiary institutions whereby students do well in high school but don’t excel in tertiary institutions,
“We saw the necessity of bringing agencies or organisations who can mentor young learners as they prepare to join tertiary institutions and outside world,” he said
He thanked Lake Victoria Water Development Agency for offering an opportunity for young learners during their memorable tour.
