Trans Nzoia gets Sh18 billion boost for roads, housing and markets

Residents of Trans Nzoia are set to benefit from a major infrastructure push after the government allocated Sh18 billion for eight road projects covering 292 kilometres across the county.

President William Ruto said the projects will improve connectivity, ease movement of people and farm produce, and link communities to markets and essential services.

He spoke during an inspection of the 20-kilometre Endebess-Kolongei-Matumbei-Salama Road, being constructed at a cost of Sh1 billion.

“I came here when I was still Deputy President, and we started the Endebess-Suam Road. We have come to ensure its completion. Only a very small section remains,” Ruto said.

He said construction has also begun on the Endebess-Bwala-Matumbei-Posta Road, funded at Sh1.2 billion and expected to be completed within a year.

Beyond roads, the president said the government is investing heavily in social infrastructure.

He said Sh2 billion has been set aside for 14 modern markets in Suam, Cherangany, Kiminini, Endebess and Kwanza, among others, to provide traders with dignified, all-weather working spaces.

On student accommodation, Ruto said Kitale National Polytechnic will get a hostel to accommodate 4,500 students as part of efforts to expand housing in TVET institutions.

“We want to ensure that TVETs and polytechnics also have hostels in Trans Nzoia, so that students have access to decent housing,” he said.

Ruto said the investments will ensure Trans Nzoia is not left behind in the national development agenda.
