Turkana, KWS strengthen partnership to curb human-wildlife conflict

The Turkana County Government has reaffirmed its partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to tackle human-wildlife conflict, improve community safety and promote peaceful co-existence between people and wildlife.

The commitment was made during a meeting convened by the Department of Natural Resources to review human-wildlife conflict, wildlife conservation and insecurity concerns across the county.

KWS Warden in Charge William Tanui briefed the meeting on the current conflict situation and stressed the importance of collaboration and information sharing in addressing challenges that affect both communities and conservation.

County Executive Committee Member for Natural Resources Dr. Antony Apalia thanked KWS for the update.

He said the department will work with stakeholders to identify practical interventions that respond to community concerns while protecting wildlife and natural resources.

Deputy Director of Natural Resources Pauline Pusiye called for sustained collaboration, public awareness and community engagement. She noted that effective interventions must balance conservation with the safety, livelihoods and wellbeing of communities.

The department says it will continue working with partners to develop practical solutions that support peaceful coexistence while safeguarding Turkana’s natural heritage.

Present also were Chief Natural Resources Officer Jacob Lokwawi and Natural Resources Officer Bernard Lokoyo.
