Two unidentified young men were lynched by an irate mob in Katito town, Nyakach Sub-County, Kisumu County on Monday, after allegedly attempting to sell a stolen motorbike.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspects were caught at Kibogo market near Katito while trying to sell the motorbike for Sh30,000.
Residents reportedly grew suspicious when they noticed the bike lacked number plates and was priced suspiciously low.
Confirming the incident, the Asao location Community Policing, Chairman, Abdalla Otieno, noted that the two suspects attempted to flee, but were pursued by a group of bodaboda riders.
The mob eventually caught-up with them, beat them, and set their bodies ablaze.
Their remains have been transferred to Pap Onditi mortuary by police officers.
Fredrick Otieno, Chairperson of the Katito town Bodaboda Association, condemned the rising cases of motorbike theft in the area.
“We are losing at least three bikes every week. This is a wake-up call to other thieves that locals are tired and are no longer willing to tolerate theft,” he warned.
Otieno urged the authorities to intensify efforts to tackle the increasing incidents of night robberies, livestock theft, and house break-ins.
This latest incident comes amid growing concerns over insecurity in the area after a security guard was murdered by unknown assailants in Ayweyo area last week.
In response, local security officials convened a joint community baraza on Monday for residents of Wawidhi and Onjiko Locations to deliberate on urgent security interventions.
