The Uasin Gishu County Government and the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB) have raised concerns about the increasing misuse of pesticides by farmers ahead of the maize harvest season.
The warning was issued during a five-day survey conducted by a PCPB team in Uasin Gishu County by the Department of Agriculture.
Speaking during a courtesy call, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Dr. Sam Kotut, cautioned farmers against using harmful chemicals to hasten maize drying.
Dr. Kotut singled out the misuse of Nova Super Blue Cross dust, which some farmers have been applying to maize before harvesting despite its adverse health effects.
On the other hand, County Director for Agriculture, Reuben Seroney, echoed the concern, urging farmers to seek guidance from certified agro-dealers and agricultural extension officers when handling pesticides.
“The improper use of pesticides not only endangers human and animal health but also undermines Uasin Gishu’s reputation as a key food basket,” Seroney warned.
The PCPB delegation was led by Nairobi Regional Manager, Peter Otieno, and North Rift Regional Manager, Anthony Wacholu.
The team is conducting field inspections, engaging with agro-dealers and sensitizing farmers on safe and responsible pesticide use across the county.
The Uasin Gishu county officials have also issued a warning to farmers against the misuse of pesticides on livestock, citing serious risks to animal health, food safety and public health.
