University professor re-arrested after court grants bond

A Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology lecturer facing murder charges had his brief freedom cut short after detectives re-arrested him and his co-accused minutes after the High Court granted them bond.

Professor Francis Ang’awa Okere, Meshack Okuku and Joash Odhiambo appeared before Siaya High Court Judge David Kemei charged with the murder of Denis Ambrose Achieng, allegedly committed on November 15, 2025.

In a ruling delivered on Friday, Justice Kemei ordered that the three be released on a Sh500,000 bond each. The court further directed them to report to the Bondo Directorate of Criminal Investigations every Monday to assist investigators and cautioned them against interfering with witnesses.

However, moments after stepping out of the court precincts, police officers moved in and whisked the suspects away as shocked relatives and friends watched, some breaking into tears.

According to a police incident report, the trio was arrested in connection with the killing of a key prosecution witness in the initial case. The witness, identified as Hezron Otieno Nyamburi, was reportedly murdered on January 16, 2026.

Police said the suspects are being held pending arraignment on Monday, January 26, 2026, when they are expected to answer to a second murder charge related to the witness’s death.
