Vihiga ODM leaders honour Raila’s democratic legacy one year later

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders and members from Vihiga County and other parts of the country on Saturday commemorated the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, celebrating his contribution to Kenya’s democracy and political development.

The gathering brought together party members from grassroots and county levels to honour the late opposition leader, popularly known as Baba, whose political legacy was highlighted through his advocacy for devolution, freedom of expression, social justice and equitable distribution of national resources.

Vihiga Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo said Raila would be remembered for his role in championing devolution, which has enabled county governments to bring services closer to citizens.

“Baba will be remembered as a leader who fought for devolution, which we are enjoying now. He also fought for democracy and freedom of speech that Kenyans enjoy today. His struggle gave counties the power and resources to serve wananchi at the grassroots,” said Ottichilo.

ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said Raila consistently advocated for equality and fairness in distributing national resources to ensure that all regions benefited from the country’s wealth.

“Baba wanted equality and equity in resources distribution so that every Kenyan, regardless of region, benefits from national wealth,” said Wanga.

Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Wycliffe Oparanya said Raila’s legacy would continue to inspire ODM members and future generations.

Oparanya reaffirmed the party’s commitment to supporting the current government, saying cooperation was important in promoting national development and unity.

“Baba’s legacy will live forever in our hearts. As ODM, we will continue to support the current government for the sake of development and unity of our country,” he said.

The leaders urged ODM members to remain united and uphold the principles that guided Raila’s political career as they continued to honour his contribution to the country.

They said his commitment to democratic reforms, devolution and social justice remained central to ODM’s identity and should continue to guide the party’s activities and engagement with Kenyans.

The leaders also emphasised the importance of preserving the values Raila championed throughout his political journey, noting that his influence on the country’s political landscape would remain significant.

The anniversary commemoration offered party members an opportunity to reflect on his contribution to Kenya’s democratic development and renew their commitment to the ideals he advocated.
