Vihiga partner with Red Cross to strengthens disaster preparedness

The County Government of Vihiga is seeking to strengthen disaster management and emergency preparedness through a renewed partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), following a consultative meeting between Governor Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo and Red Cross officials from Vihiga branch.

Speaking after the meeting, Monday, Governor Ottichilo said the County Administration is committed to putting in place proper structures that will enhance collaboration with the humanitarian organization in responding to disasters and emergencies across the County.

The Governor noted that plans are underway to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the County Government and the Kenya Red Cross Society, to provide a clear framework for cooperation, implementation of joint activities, and the development of a strategic plan that will open opportunities for funding and support.

“As a County, we are focused on building a strong and coordinated disaster response system that will ensure timely intervention and preparedness during emergencies,” said Governor Ottichilo.

He further revealed that the County recently constituted a County Disaster Management Committee bringing together representatives from key departments, including Education, Environment, Gender, and Public Service Management & ICT.

According to the Governor, the Committee has been tasked with developing regulations that will operationalize the County Disaster Fund, a move expected to improve disaster response and resource mobilization within the County.

Governor Ottichilo also announced that the establishment of a fully-fledged Disaster Management Unit under the Office of the Governor will enhance coordination and formalize disaster response efforts in partnership with stakeholders such as the Kenya Red Cross.

The County boss applauded young volunteers serving under the Kenya Red Cross for their dedication and commitment to humanitarian service.

He affirmed that the County government will continue creating platforms for training, capacity building, and empowerment of youth volunteers, to strengthen community resilience and emergency response efforts.

The partnership is expected to play a critical role in improving preparedness and response to disasters such as floods, fires, accidents, and other emergencies affecting residents of Vihiga County.
