Wempa Zone dominates Murang’a South games

Mangoto Junior School emerged as the standout performer at the Murang’a South Zonal Games, sweeping both the boys’ and girls’ netball titles during the competition held at Makuyu Boys High School.

The games, which took place from June 22 to 23, brought together schools from the three zones of Murang’a South Sub-County—Wempa, Kirimiri and Kambiti—with teams battling for qualification to the upcoming sub-county games.

Mangoto Junior School displayed impressive teamwork, discipline and composure throughout the tournament, defeating all opponents in both categories to secure a double netball victory. The achievement crowned the school as the overall netball champion and earned it the opportunity to represent Wempa Zone at the next level of competition.

Wempa Zone dominated the games across several disciplines, securing eight qualification slots, while Kambiti Zone managed two. Schools from Kirimiri Zone failed to secure any qualification positions.

Peter Kariuki Junior Secondary School and Mangoto Junior School were among the most successful institutions, each advancing three teams to the sub-county level. Kangangu Junior School and Kimorori Junior School also secured qualification slots in various disciplines.

In volleyball, Kangangu Junior School won the girls’ category, while Kimorori Junior School emerged victorious in the boys’ competition after defeating opponents from the other zones.

Basketball honours also went to Wempa Zone, with Peter Kariuki Junior Secondary School qualifying in the girls’ category and Mangoto Junior School securing the boys’ title.

Marema Junior Secondary School impressed in handball, with both its girls’ and boys’ teams earning qualification to the sub-county games following strong performances during the zonal competition.

In football, Peter Kariuki Junior Secondary School emerged winners in the boys’ category, while Marema Junior Secondary School claimed victory in the girls’ competition to book their places at the next stage.

According to the competition regulations, teams representing a zone at the sub-county level comprise 75 per cent players from the winning team and 25 per cent outstanding players selected from other participating teams.

The Murang’a South Sub- County Games will be held on July 6 and 7 at Makuyu Boys High School, where teams will compete for the chance to represent the sub-county at the county level.
