Governor Ottichilo urges youth to embrace self-employment

Vihiga governor Dr. Wilber Ottichilo has challenged young people in the county to shift their mindset from job-seeking to job creation.

Speaking during the Maragoli Hills Ecosystem Restoration Conference held at Friends Primary School Ideleri in Vihiga County, Dr. Ottichilo urged youngsters to take charge of their future through self-employment and innovation.

The governor was apparently responding to a bold question from a youthful participant, who had asked how the county government was addressing the distressing issue of youth unemployment.

“The best form of employment is self-employment. We cannot all wait for office jobs. Youths must take the lead in creating their own opportunities,” Dr. Ottichilo said, emphasizing the county’s commitment to supporting youth-led initiatives that demonstrate innovation and sustainability.

On matters environment, the governor disclosed that more than 162 beehives are being prepared for installation at the Maragoli Hills, as part of the ecosystem restoration efforts.

He also revealed plans to establish a honey processing plant that will create job opportunities for the local community, particularly the youth.

Echoing the governor’s sentiments, the County Director of Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources, Aquila Lwanga, urged the youth to organize themselves into formal groups such as environmental conservation or tree nursery teams.

Lwanga underscored that funding and support from the government is more accessible to well-organized and visionary youth groups.

“The government cannot fund youths who have no plans or clear direction. Organizing yourselves into groups shows some level of seriousness and commitment. It becomes easier to support those who are ready,” she said.

The Director also encouraged young people to explore non-traditional agricultural sectors, particularly those aligned with environmental conservation, citing apiculture (bee-keeping) as a promising, eco-friendly enterprise that can drive sustainable livelihoods.

“We must move beyond traditional maize and beans farming. Eco-friendly enterprises are the future for sustainable income and employment,” she added.
