Leaders from the Igembe region in Meru County want the government to fast track and intensify ongoing security operations in order to fully restore peace in areas affected by banditry.
Speaking at Ndumuru, a northern grazing zone that has experienced repeated attacks, Members of the Meru County Assembly (MCAs) expressed fears that although the government had shown commitment to address insecurity in the area, more urgent and visible action was required to reassure residents to safely return to their homes and farms.
The leaders emphasized that restoring security would not only protect lives but also revive economic activities, particularly livestock farming, which remains a key source of livelihood in the region.
Akirang’ondu Ward MCA Morris Ntarangwi noted that residents are eager to see the impact of planned security operations on the ground, urging authorities to move with speed and decisiveness.
“We believe the government has the capacity to end these attacks. What residents need now is to see quick and tangible results,” he said.
Igembe East MCA Josphat Murithi called for strengthened coordination among security agencies under the Ministry of Interior, led by Kipchumba Murkomen, noting that a unified approach would enhance effectiveness in dealing with the criminals.
Kiegoi/Antubochiu Ward MCA Kabaako Mutwiri appealed for continued support from national leadership, including Kithure Kindiki, to reinforce operations and ensure long-term stability in the affected zones.
The MCAs also highlighted the importance of empowering local security structures such as National Police Reservists, saying their role is crucial in complementing national efforts already underway.
Njia Ward MCA and Deputy Speaker Ali Mwenda encouraged more frequent engagement between senior government officials and affected communities to better understand local challenges and build confidence in the ongoing interventions.
Igembe Central MP Daniel Karitho said he is in close contact with the President, expressing optimism that the government will deliver lasting solutions to the insecurity problem.
Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu echoed the call for urgency, noting that the country has sufficient resources and personnel to address the issue effectively.
The leaders maintained that timely action, combined with sustained government commitment, will be key to restoring normalcy and ensuring that residents can once again live and work without fear.
They expressed confidence that with enhanced efforts, the region will soon achieve lasting peace and stability.
