Political leaders in Nyanza region led by Energy Cabinet Secretary, Opiyo Wandayi, have sent messages of condolences to Nyando MP Jared Okello, following the death of his mother, Mama Doris Okello. Mama Doris, the family matriarch passed-away on the night of Tuesday, May 5,, 2026 after a short illness.
CS Wandayi conveyed his sympathy to the Legislator and his family, describing the late as a woman of great generosity and humility, recalling his personal interactions with her as impactful and inspiring.
“I had the privilege to interact with Mama Doris and felt her generosity and humility. Her memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her,” Wandanyi stated.
Kisumu Governor, Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o, described the loss as a profound sorrowful moment to the entire Nyando Sub-county, noting it marked the departure of a wellspring of love, wisdom, identity, and unwavering support.
The ODM National Chairperson and Homabay County Governor, Gladys Wanga, described Mama Doris as a longtime family friend, noting that she was a truly special person in her life.
“I will always remember her deep commitment to the church, particularly her home church Othoo SDA. Mama Dorris’ faith was evident not only in her devotion, but in the way she lived, serving others selflessly, offering guidance, and uplifting those around her with quiet strength and grace. Her life was a testament to love, humility, faith, and service,” Wanga stated.
On his part, Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr. Mathew Owili, described the late as a true pillar and guiding light of her family, saying her passing has left an incomprehensible void that no words can fill.
“Mama Doris was not only a pillar within her family but a woman of strong faith, conviction, and grace. As a steadfast member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, she lived a life anchored in spiritual devotion, humility, and service to others,” Dr Owili said.
His counterpart from Muhoroni Constituency, James Koyoo noted the late MP’s mother will be remembered as a wise, resilient matriarch whose nurturing spirit shaped and inspired the entire community. “Her legacy of love and guidance will forever remain a pillar in the lives of those she touched,” Koyoo stated.
Speaker of the Kisumu County Assembly Elisha Oraro noted that through the demise of Mama Doris, Nyando Sub County has lost a true pillar. He described the late as a loving mother to her family, and the wider community at large.
“She was a source of wisdom, kindness, and strength to many beyond her home,” Speaker Oraro eulogized. Details regarding the funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.
