Police in Eldoret have impounded a car transporting bhang worth over Sh 9 million from the Lesos area en route to Nairobi following a tip-off.
Eldoret Central Sub-county Police Commander, Zephaniah Kamuren said the officers intercepted the car during regular patrol operations after receiving intelligence reports about the shipment of the narcotic drugs.
“We received intelligence that there was a vehicle ferrying narcotics. Upon interception, which occurred at the Napkoi forest area, the two suspects fled into the forest, abandoning the vehicle,” he said.
He said efforts to track down the fleeing suspect were, however, not fruitful but confirmed that the officers recovered the vehicle in which over 180 kgs of bhang were found.
“We managed to tow the vehicle, a Honda model, which was used to transport the bhang to Eldoret Police Station. With the help of the Anti-Narcotics Unit, we discovered 182.11 Kgs of bhang of street value worth Sh 9.1 million,” said Kamuren.
He acknowledged the citizens for providing information that facilitated the successful operation, noting that the security team is highly alert to ensure all illicit drugs transported from across various regions through Uasin Gishu are impounded and suspects are arraigned in court.
Kamuren revealed that preliminary investigations indicate that the intercepted bhang originated from across the Kenyan border with Uganda.
“We have taken the vehicle details, and through NTSA, we shall be able to bring to book the owner of the vehicle to help in carrying out our investigations into the matter,” added Kamuren.
Uasin Gishu County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Daniel Muleli affirmed that they have launched investigations to bring to book all suspects involved in the illicit business.
“This is a serious matter, and whoever is involved, severe action will be taken against him. We have already started our investigations to establish the owner of the vehicle, including the point where this bhang is coming from,” noted the CCIO, Muleli.
