Kajiado County Government has released Sh50 million in bursary to support 12,000 learners in secondary schools, tertiary institutions and universities across the county.
The funds are part of the county’s Sh200 million annual bursary and scholarship programme aimed at supporting needy and vulnerable students.
Speaking during the disbursement exercise, Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku said the bursary programme was intended to ensure learners remain in school despite financial challenges facing many families.
Lenku said beneficiaries were drawn from all wards across the county under the county education support programme.
“We want our children to continue with their education without interruption. No learner should miss school because of lack of school fees,” said the governor.
He noted that the county government would continue investing in education to improve access, retention and transition of learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
County Director of Education, Martin Cheruiyot, commended the initiative, saying it had helped reduce school dropout cases and absenteeism associated with fee arrears.
Cheruiyot said timely disbursement of bursary funds had eased the financial burden on parents and enhanced school attendance across the county.
School principals who attended the event welcomed the release of the funds, noting that the support would enable many students to continue with their studies without disruption.
The county government is expected to release the remaining bursary allocation in phases during the course of the year.
