The move to improve learning conditions in Mathioya Constituency gained momentum after Mioro Senior Day School received its first-ever school bus, with area MP Edwin Mugo unveiling an ambitious plan to equip more day secondary schools with buses through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF).
The newly acquired bus is expected to ease transport challenges that have for years limited students’ participation in academic tours, sports competitions and other co-curricular activities, while reducing the cost of hiring vehicles.
Speaking during the handover of the bus on Friday, Mugo said school transport has become an integral part of quality education, noting that institutions without buses often miss valuable learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
He announced that four other senior day secondary schools; Gitugi Mixed, Kiriaini Mixed, Kamune and Iruri secondary schools, have also been earmarked to receive buses through the constituency’s NG-CDF programme in the coming months.
The legislator noted that the buses will not only benefit students, but will also serve members of the surrounding communities whenever the need arises, helping ease transport challenges during community activities and emergencies.
The MP noted that Mioro Senior Day School is the first institution in Mathioya Constituency to acquire a school bus through the NG-CDF, since the constituency was established, describing the project as a milestone in efforts to modernize learning institutions.
Mugo, who serves as a member of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee, reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to strengthening the education sector through adequate funding.
He said the committee has allocated sufficient resources in the national budget to support basic education, university education, school capitation and other critical programmes aimed at improving access to quality education across the country.
Mugo expressed confidence that timely funding of the education sector would enable schools to operate more effectively while ensuring learners receive the support they need to excel academically.
He further asked school management to ensure the institutions have sufficient security citing the recent wave of student unrest which left schools’ properties worth millions of shillings destroyed.
“Our schools need to have appropriate security. Learners should feel much safer while in schools. It is my prayer that the institutions’ management needs to provide security measures for both learners and school properties,” he added.
On her part, Mioro school board of management chairperson Susan Karina welcomed the new bus, saying it marks the end of years of transport difficulties that had seen students miss educational trips and co-curricular events due to the high cost or unavailability of hired buses.
Parents and education stakeholders also hailed the initiative, expressing optimism that reliable transport will enhance students’ exposure, improve participation in competitions and strengthen the school’s overall academic performance.
The school bus programme is part of a broader education development agenda in Mathioya, where the constituency leadership continues to invest in classrooms, laboratories, learning equipment and other infrastructure aimed at improving the quality of education.
