Police in Tharaka Nithi County are investigating an incident where two people were killed while two others sustained serious injuries after armed gangsters raided a homestead in Kamwimbi area, Igambang’ombe Sub County, on Thursday evening.
According to police reports, six assailants, who were armed with a firearm and crude weapons, stormed the home of Vivian Wawira Nyaga at around 7 pm.
The gang reportedly caused chaos at the compound before fatally attacking David Muchiri, 32, at the entrance to the homestead.
The assailants allegedly fired several gunshots to disperse residents before forcing their way into the house, where they fatally injured Deborah Muthoni Nyagah, 68, who had reportedly been staying at her daughter’s home.
Two other victims sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Duncan Namu, 34, suffered neck injuries, while Shadrack Lungumen , a watchman at the homestead, sustained a gunshot wound to the left leg.
According to Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander, Zaccheus Ng’eno the attackers managed to gain access into the highly guarded compound after allegedly killing one of the gatekeepers who had responded to screams outside the gate.
Speaking after recording statements at the DCI offices in Chuka, Wawira’s daughter said one of the injured victims is fighting for his life with a bullet lodged in his head. They appealed for urgent specialized treatment, claiming Chuka County Referral Hospital lacks a neurosurgeon.
Other occupants in the compound, including two househelps, escaped unhurt during the attack.
The family suspects the attackers may have targeted the elderly woman and her daughter in what they described as a calculated mission.
However, the daughter was reportedly admitted to a hospital in Embu at the time of the incident.
The injured victims were rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were moved to the facility’s mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
Ng’eno said investigations into the incident are ongoing, with the assailants still at large.
The family has called on security agencies to expedite investigations, saying they fear for their safety following the brutal incident.
