The Nyahururu–Rumuruti road was blocked for most of the day Saturday, by residents of Jebi Township, Laikipia County, who were protesting the murder of a middle-aged woman under unclear circumstances.
The protesters lit bonfires and chanted slogans to express their frustration over increasing insecurity and criticised the police for what they termed as slow investigation into the murder of Susan Nyambura, also known as Maggie.
According to residents, Nyambura went missing on October 19, 2025, and her body was later found in a maize plantation. Preliminary reports suggest she was sexually assaulted before being killed, causing shock and outrage in the community.
Demonstrators expressed concern over increasing insecurity and a pattern of unresolved murders, urging authorities to take decisive action while also accusing local security agencies of laxity. They demanded for the immediate transfer of police officers whom they claimed had failed to respond adequately to rising crime in the region.
The area Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Joseph Mutiso called for calm, assuring residents that investigations were underway.
He noted that six individuals have given statements to the police and we are pursuing important leads to identify the perpetrators.
Police officers were deployed to clear the road and restore order, resulting in a few arrests among demonstrators. Tensions remained high as residents pledged to continue their protests until justice is served.
