Iten market nears completion

Traders in Iten have welcomed the ongoing construction of a modern market, expressing optimism that the facility will transform trade in the area by improving working conditions, enhancing security, and creating new business opportunities.

The traders said the market will provide a conducive environment for both vendors and customers while promoting hygiene, organised trade and supporting economic growth within the town.

Speaking during an interview, trader Rose Kimutai described the project as a major milestone for local traders who have operated under challenging conditions for many years.

“We are very happy to have a market like this. It is a modern and smart market that will improve our future and support many families,” said Kimutai.

She noted that the facility will provide a decent trading space for women and other small-scale traders, enabling them to conduct business more efficiently and attract more customers through improved infrastructure and organisation.

Kimutai, however, pointed out that traders continue to face challenges in the current market, particularly insecurity and inadequate facilities.

“The challenge we are facing is that the current market is not safe for many people. We are appealing to the government to continue supporting women traders so that they can access opportunities and improve their businesses,” she added.

Another trader, Victor Kipletting, said the modern market would significantly boost business activities and attract more customers to the area.

“We have been facing many challenges, but we are hopeful that this market will provide a better environment for trade and create more opportunities for people to earn a living,” he said.

Kipletting expressed hope that the new facility would address longstanding concerns such as inadequate sanitation and unreliable water supply.

“We have struggled with poor toilet facilities and lack of water for a long time. We are optimistic that the new market will provide better washrooms and a regular supply of water,” he noted.

He also encouraged young people to embrace entrepreneurship and take advantage of the opportunities the market offers.

“I urge the youth to venture into business and trading because there are many opportunities available. Instead of engaging in drug abuse, they should come to the market, create employment for themselves, and earn a living,” he said.

Meanwhile, trader Anita Kurgat praised the government for investing in the project, describing it as a major boost for local traders.

“I would like to thank the government for building this modern market for us. It is a smart and beautiful facility that will greatly improve our working conditions,” she said.

Kurgat noted that many traders have been operating in makeshift structures, exposing their goods to harsh weather conditions. She said the new market will provide proper shelter, improved sanitation, and a more secure trading environment.

“It is a big market that will accommodate many women and other traders. We hope it will create jobs and improve the lives of many people,” she added.

Residents and traders have expressed confidence that the project will contribute significantly to the economic development of Iten and the wider Elgeyo Marakwet County.
