Hundreds of youths from Jomvu Sub-county braved the morning cold, to participate in a fitness run dubbed “team discipline.”
The initiative, patronized by Mombasa businessman, Abubakar Joho, aims to promote healthy living and inspire young people to shun drug abuse and other social vices associated with parts of the Coast region.
The group’s Founder Eng. Tolbert Musanju, representing the Patron said the concept will expand and incorporate mentorship and networking that will see youth from across the County linked to job opportunities that merge with their specializations and education background.
“We urge our youth to join this noble course that will soon incorporate the inception of prize money tournaments, mentorship, networking and an array of sport disciplines that will keep our young men and women productively busy,” said Eng. Musanju.
Jomvu based fitness coach, Edwin Ambani noted that the construction of amenities such as well-equipped social halls at Sub-County level will go a long way in nurturing budding talent that in most cases go unexploited.
“Miritini lacks a good social hall which caters for the needs of our youth who are passionate about sports and healthy living. We urge the leadership in the County to consider bringing such amenities to the grassroots to tap into the surging number of talented youth,” said Ambani.
Jean Mutheu, a Jomvu Kuu resident said apart from keeping the youth in good shape, the initiative has been instrumental in identifying needy but talented and well-educated youth who have directly benefited from the program.
Mutheu added that since the first edition in Mvita Sub-county, youth have received necessary facilitation through the patron, including assistance with acquisition of basic legal documentation such as Identification Cards (IDs) and driver’s licenses.
“From the earlier editions of the initiative, youth have been assisted in application and acquisition of documentation that has helped them seek employment, register as voters, acquire passports to travel among many things that will go a long way to keep them off the streets and be responsible citizens,” noted Mutheu.
