Balambala Hospital upgrade set to transform regional healthcare

Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, yesterday visited Balambala Sub-County in Garissa County to inspect the ongoing construction of the Balambala Sub-County Hospital, a major healthcare project expected to transform medical service delivery in the region.

The 150-bed capacity hospital, which is currently 70 per cent complete, represents a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure for Balambala and the wider northeastern region.

The facility is expected to improve access to quality healthcare services and reduce the burden on residents who often travel long distances in search of specialized treatment.

Speaking during the inspection tour, CS Duale expressed satisfaction with the progress of the project and confirmed that upon completion, the facility will be upgraded to a Level 5 hospital.

He noted that once operational, the hospital will offer comprehensive healthcare services, including specialized outpatient and inpatient care, surgical services, and maternity and newborn units, as well as enhanced diagnostic capabilities.

“The upgrade will significantly improve access to advanced healthcare services and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment outside the county,” said Duale.

The CS reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to healthcare across all regions of the country.

He noted that the completion of the Balambala Hospital will mark a major milestone for Garissa County and contribute significantly to the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Duale said the facility is awaiting formal commissioning by President William Ruto once construction is fully completed. He urged the contractor to maintain high standards and adhere to the project timelines to ensure timely completion.

The CS noted that the project reflects the government’s continued investment in health infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas, in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.

He was accompanied by Garissa County CECM for Health Ahmednadhir Omar, senior government officials, and local leaders.
