Malunga West Football Club scooped the Susan Okwirry Sino–Nyamawira tournament trophy after thrashing Malunga Central FC on post-match penalties during a match played at the Wagai Primary School grounds.
The two teams had settled on a barren draw during the normal time in a tournament sponsored by Gem West, member of the county assembly, Susan Okwirry Sino.
In girls’ soccer, North East Gem defeated North West Gem, while in volleyball, North West lifted the trophy after dismissing North East Gem.
In netball, North West Gem was declared the queen after defeating North East Gem.
Speaking after the tournament, the sponsor, Susan Okwirry Sino, said a total of 14 teams took part in the tournament that brought together teams from all the 10 sublocations in West Gem Ward.
The MCA, also known as Nyamawira, called on leaders to support the youth to develop their talents.
She also challenged the youth to be attending public participation forums and give their input to the county budget.
Siaya County Chief Officer for Governance and Administration, Walter Okello, who was among the chief guests during the tournament, said sports were one of the surest ways of engaging the youth.
“When they show their talents here, somebody may spot them and promote them to the next level,” said Okello, adding, “Any platform that brings young people together is a welcome idea.”
