Kandumo–Rwacumari road upgrade transforms Ndeiya

In the heart of Ndeiya Sub-County, Kiambu County, a dusty relic of the past is giving way to a modern lifeline. The upgrade of the Kandumo-Rwacumari road to bitumen standard is advancing rapidly, bringing renewed hope of connectivity to residents and traders, long frustrated by seasonal transport challenges.

Once a notorious earth track plagued by choking dust in dry seasons and treacherous mud during rains, the road also frequently became impassable due to flash floods. Farmers struggled to transport produce from the fertile agricultural zones to the bustling Kandumo shopping hub, while commuters faced delays accessing schools, health facilities, and markets. Those days are fast fading as heavy machinery paves the way for a durable asphalt surface.

The project, spearheaded under the infrastructure drive of Limuru MP Engineer John Kiragu Chege, is being implemented with support from the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) through national government funding mechanisms, including the Road Maintenance Levy Fund. Officials credit the MP’s persistent advocacy for turning a decades-old dream, unfulfilled since independence, into tangible progress.

Vivid scenes of transformation are visible along the route: graders leveling the alignment, culverts, standardized drainage systems taking shape to combat soil erosion, and teams laying the foundation for a smooth bitumen carpet. Traders at Kandumo report early relief as sections near completion allow smoother goods movement, slashing transit time and vehicle maintenance costs.

“This road is a game-changer no more Lorries stuck in the mud. Our produce will reach markets fresher and children can get to school safely even in the rains,” said a local farmer Njeri Wainaina transporting vegetables

The upgraded artery will link internal farming areas directly to economic nodes, stimulating trade in agriculture, lowering logistics expenses, and enhancing access to essential public services.

Economists project a boost to the local economy through increased commerce, job creation during and after construction, and greater investment appeal in Ndeiya.

KeRRA engineers have integrated climate-resilient features, including proper drainage to protect against erosion and flooding in this region’s variable weather. The project underscores broader national efforts to open up rural Kenya through strategic road infrastructure.

Works are progressing steadily, with completion anticipated by mid-2027, weather permitting.

Residents have expressed optimism that this development will mark the beginning of sustained growth for Ndeiya Sub-County.

As tarmac replaces the old murram scars, the Kandumo-Rwacumari road stands as a testament to responsive leadership and the power of infrastructure to uplift communities. For Ndeiya, better days and smoother rides are firmly on the horizon.
