A 15-year-old girl was killed by a crocodile while fetching water from Athi river, in Kibwezi Sub county on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred at Ndalani Village, in Kikumbulyu North Ward at 6.30 p.m. while the Grade 10 student was drawing water from the crocodile infested Athi River.
Efforts to rescue the girl last evening were futile since the crocodile dragged the victim to the deep waters of the river hence making it hard for those present to offer any assistance.
When contacted for comment, the County Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Warden Gabriel Kiio confirmed the incident saying the body has been retrieved from the river while adding that the police have been prevented from taking the body to the mortuary in Makindu Sub County Hospital.
However, KNA has established unconfirmed reports that the irate wananchi are reacting to the slow response from KWS rangers to incidents of crocodile attacks, especially the recent one that occurred at the same spot the girl was killed.
The retrieval of the body was done by the community members on Wednesday morning.
