Kiambu County is set to go green following plans to convert all boreholes pumps to utilize solar energy as part of the County’s government commitment to cut on power costs, while adopting to climate change mitigation efforts towards environmental conservation.
County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment, David Kuria, who chaired a crucial meeting to lay out the transformation plan, said the move was a key commitment under the Governor Kimani Wamatangi’s Manifesto for energy cost reduction and promotion of green energy.
The initiative will cover over 150 County boreholes, with the shift to renewable energy coming at a time when electricity costs have significantly impacted water service delivery across the County.
The high-level meeting brought together Managing Directors of water companies, Climate Change Officers, Natural Resources Officers, Conservation Officers from water companies, and Water Officers to deliberate on the implementation of the environment strategy.
During the meeting, all water companies reached a unanimous agreement to embark on the green energy transition, starting from the new Financial Year, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable water management practices.
“The solarization project represents our dedication to environmental conservation, while ensuring affordable and reliable water services for our residents,” said CECM Kuria, during the meeting.
The meeting also highlighted the County’s participation in the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program, which is providing crucial support for the conservation of selected rivers across Kiambu County.
Through the comprehensive environmental initiative, the County plans to plant over 100,000 water-friendly and fruit tree seedlings along riverbanks and water catchment areas, enhancing both environmental conservation and food security.
The tree planting exercise will focus on indigenous and water-friendly species that will help in water conservation, soil stabilization, and creating sustainable ecosystems around water sources.
Water companies operating in the County have committed to partner with the County government in protecting vital water sources, while simultaneously enhancing the aesthetic appeal of avenues across Kiambu, through strategic tree planting initiatives.
The solarization project aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the County’s Climate Change mitigation strategies, positioning Kiambu as a leader in sustainable water management and renewable energy adoption in the region.
