Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary (CS) Rebeca Miano has urged all county governments to announce their key cultural events on time in order to give the national government enough time to market them globally.
The CS noted that there are many unique cultural events that attract tourists in various counties affirming that the government remains keen on promoting these events as part of its broader strategy to position Kenya as a leading cultural and adventure destination.
Speaking in Maralal after flagging off the 13-kilometer professional camel race during this year’s Maralal International Camel Derby, the CS assured county governments of support towards their cultural events which boosts the country’s tourism efforts.
“As a ministry we want to partner with counties to promote these events to international level, that is why we have partnered with Samburu County to promote this unique sporting and cultural activity.
The modern traveler and the modern tourist are interested in such events and the Maralal camel derby is an example of the diversification that we have,” she said.
She further noted that events and festivals have been instrumental in pushing visitation to different regions of the country by enhancing visibility, strengthening cultural pride, and creating opportunities for local communities.
At the same time, she disclosed the Maa cultural festivals, Lamu cultural festivals; Tobongu’lore festivals are already getting both local and international visibility since they were already scheduled on the annual calendar of events.
“Northern Kenya offers a rare blend of culture, landscapes, and adventure. By strategically positioning events like the Camel Derby on the tourism calendar, we not only enhance visibility but also ensure our counties benefit from increased tourist flows. The government is fully committed to promoting such events as they are proven catalysts for tourism growth,” she added.
According to the CS, her Ministry will continue collaborating with county governments and private sector players to strengthen Kenya’s events tourism portfolio and ensure each region gets its rightful place on the national tourism calendar.
Samburu county governor Johnathan Lelelit termed the camel derby the only camel race of its kind in Africa showcases the county’s uniqueness while positioning Samburu on the international tourism map.
“The Maralal Camel Derby is not just a sporting spectacle, it is Samburu’s gift to the world. Beyond the thrill of the races, the camel remains a symbol of peace and unity among our communities. This event brings people together, fostering cultural exchange, harmony, and shared pride in our heritage. We welcome the world to experience this truly African celebration of sport, culture, and peace.” Stressed the governor.
The governor pointed out that the camel derby is the only camel race of its kind in Africa, and it highlights the county’s uniqueness while positioning Samburu on the international tourism map.
