The much-anticipated construction of Sh500 million Kangangi modern market in Kiambu town has officially kicked off.
The project being funded by the national and county governments was unveiled during a public sensitization forum convened by the local Directorate of Trade and Markets and the Kiambu Town municipality. It aims at promoting businesses and improving livelihoods in the region.
The event brought together hundreds of traders, area leaders and residents, all eager to witness the beginning of what has been termed a game-changer for the Kiambu business fraternity.
The State- of- the Art two-storey facility will feature over 1,000 trading stalls, cold storage room, modern kitchen, day care center, nursing room, ICT hub and a community hall.
It will also include a parking area for customers and traders, as well as Kiambu Town Municipality offices, making it a one stop hub for commerce.
Kiambu Town Municipal Manager John Njoroge, who led the forum alongside Acting Director for Public Participation, Ndiba Thandi and Director of Trade Jane Kamunge, emphasized that the market’s design reflects the county’s commitment to inclusive growth.
“This project is more than infrastructure, it’s a symbol of empowerment for our traders,” said Njoroge.
The Kiambu Township ward representative, Francis Koina, assured local traders that the relocation process would be managed smoothly, noting that all casual and construction jobs will be reserved for Kiambu residents.
“We are ensuring that every stage of this project benefits our people directly,” Koina affirmed, adding that the market will accommodate over 3,000 traders upon completion next year.
On his part, Kiambu market chairman, George Mwanja, hailed governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi’s administration for turning the long-standing promises into a reality.
“The upcoming market will restore dignity to our traders and enhance business efficiency,” he said.
According to county officials, the construction of Kangangi market will take 12 months, with the contractor expected to begin work within a week.
The two levels of government also aim to develop other modern markets across the county; in Githunguri, Wangige, Thika’s Madaraka and Githurai areas.
Once completed, the markets will contribute greatly to the achievement of governor Wamatangi’s vision of transforming Kiambu into a vibrant commercial hub.
