Tension and grief have gripped Soko Village in Kanyach Kachar Location, Homa Bay town constituency, after a man was killed in a road accident involving a police vehicle.
The deceased, James Oguta, succumbed to injuries at the Homa Bay County Referral Hospital following the crash that occurred near Nyalkinyi area along the Homa Bay–Kendu Bay Road.
According to witnesses, the accident, which occurred yesterday, involved a police Land Cruiser attached to Homa Bay Police Station and a motorcycle on which Oguta was riding as a passenger. The motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries and was admitted to the same hospital in critical condition.
His widow, Franseddy Oguta, accused the police driver of recklessness, claiming the Land Cruiser was overtaking at high speed before hitting the motorcycle.
“My husband left home in the morning for work. Moments later, I was called and told he had been hit by a police vehicle. They said the officers were speeding and overtaking carelessly,” she said.
Distraught family members and residents are now demanding justice, accusing police of attempting to downplay the incident. They want an independent investigation to establish the truth and ensure accountability.
“We will not rest until justice is served. Our brother was innocent and died because of someone’s mistakes,” said a relative.
Homa Bay County Police Commander, Lawrence Koilel, confirmed the incident and said investigations are ongoing, adding that the matter is being handled transparently.
