Residents of Kamaginga, Meru County, were forced to carry a casket on foot for over one kilometer to burial site yesterday following heavy rains that rendered the Nchoroiboro – Kijana-Njuruta Road muddy and impassable.
The planned funeral was delayed due to muddy roads, preventing vehicles, including the hearse, access to the homestead.
According to the residents, many roads in the area are not motorable during rainy season. The situation, they said, forces families to often carry the sick to hospital, and caskets on foot during burials.
Emmanuel Bundi, a resident, has expressed the need to have the roads upgraded noting the poor conditions complicate response in urgent medical situations.
The residents are appealing to their area Member of County Assembly (MCA) Felix Kithinji and the Meru County government to urgently repair the road saying the situation has disrupted not only transport but also their ability to conduct normal business activities.
“We cannot transport heavy commodities or farm produce to the market. We are pleading with the county government to come to our aid,” a resident.
