Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has announced that President William Ruto will soon confer a charter to Bomet University College, elevating it to a fully-fledged university.
Speaking during a church fundraiser at Kaboson in Bomet County on Sunday, Murkomen said the charter would mark a major milestone in the growth of higher education in the South Rift region.
He assured residents that the process was already at an advanced stage, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to improving access to education across all levels.
“Bomet University College will soon become a full university. His Excellency the President has made education a key priority, and this elevation is part of his plan to expand access to quality higher education,” said Murkomen.
Currently operating as a constituent college of Moi University, Bomet University College has steadily grown since its establishment, attracting thousands of students pursuing degrees in business, education, science, and technology.
Once granted, the charter will give the university full autonomy in academic governance, curriculum development, and research collaborations. This will enable the institution to design academic programmes that directly respond to regional and national development priorities.
The upgrade is also expected to stimulate socio-economic growth in the region through increased employment opportunities, expanded infrastructure, and enhanced teaching and learning facilities.
“Local businesses, especially in the housing and service sectors, are projected to benefit from the rising number of students and staff,” the CS observed.
Murkomen lauded President Ruto for his continued support of the education sector, noting that the government has made substantial investments to expand access to universities and technical training institutions across the country.
He noted that the elevation and increase in the number of universities was part of the President’s vision to make Kenya a regional hub of education and innovation, saying that by empowering the universities, the youth are equally empowered to shape their own future.
The announcement was received with excitement among Bomet residents, who described the move as long-overdue recognition of the county’s growing role in national education and development.
At the same time, Murkomen urged Kenyans to actively participate in key government programs such as the Social Health Authority (SHA) initiative and the Affordable Housing Project, emphasizing that public involvement is crucial to realizing the administration’s development agenda.
“Let us take part in these transformative programs, because they are designed to uplift every Kenyan household,” he said.
