A Grade Nine pupil died and three others injured, Thursday, evening after a tipper lorry carrying sand rammed into a motorcycle at Nyangweso along the Kendu Bay-Homa Bay Road in Homa Bay County.
The 5pm accident took place when the motorcycle carrying three sisters and a neighbour attempted to pass a parked lorry.
According to eyewitnesses, the parked lorry drove-off just as the motorcycle was passing it, and a tipper truck that was following closely behind reportedly failed to brake on time, crashing into the motorcycle from behind.
The youngest of the girls, a grade nine pupil who was the last passenger on the motorcycle, died on the spot.
The other two sisters and the motorcycle rider sustained injuries and were rushed to Janeiro Private Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.
East Kochia Location Chief, Lilian Ombai, who visited the scene and later conducted inquiries at the Hospital, confirmed the fatality and said the body of the deceased has been moved to the Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
“From what we gathered, the motorcycle was overtaking a lorry that had been parked. The tipper behind them was speeding and seemed out of control,” the Chief said, adding that the lorry left the area immediately after the crash.
The tipper driver fled the scene shortly after the incident.
She urged motorists to observe traffic rules and exercise caution on the roads, especially during the festive season, to avoid similar tragedies.
