The County Government of Vihiga has stepped up efforts to promote clean and affordable energy after launching and handing over a solarisation project targeting low-income households in Central Maragoli Ward, Vihiga Sub-County.
The project was launched by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment, Water, Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr Jairus Amayi, accompanied by Central Maragoli Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Pauline Amwata.
Speaking during the event, Dr Amayi said the initiative demonstrates the department’s commitment to promoting renewable energy, environmental conservation and sustainable development within the community.
He noted that the adoption of solar energy will reduce reliance on fossil fuels and conventional electricity, lower household energy costs and minimise health risks associated with the use of kerosene lamps.
An installation carried out at one of the beneficiary households marked a significant milestone towards building a greener and more sustainable future for residents, particularly vulnerable groups including women-headed households, persons with disabilities (PWDs) and low-income families.
Dr Amayi added that the centralised low-cost solar systems are a strategic intervention aimed at addressing climate change, reducing poverty, creating employment opportunities and enhancing environmental conservation at the grassroots level.
Chief Officer for Environment, Energy, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr Richard Boiyo, and Director for Environment, Energy and Natural Resources, Aquila Lwanga, were also present during the exercise.
The project is expected to encourage more households across Central Maragoli Ward to embrace clean, reliable and sustainable energy solutions.
