Butula Member of Parliament Joseph Oyula has urged parents and education stakeholders to work together to improve education standards and ensure 100 percent transition of learners to Grade 10.
Speaking during the commissioning of a fully equipped administration block at St. Peters Bumala B Secondary School, Butula sub county, Oyula called on parents to ensure all learners who completed grade 9 join Grade 10.
“I want our sub-county to achieve 100 per cent transition to Grade 10, so that our children can continue with their education. Parents with children still at home should take them to school and visit the local NG-CDF office to apply for bursaries before the deadline,” he said.
The MP emphasized the need for proper channels when addressing school-related disputes, urging parents and teachers to cooperate.
“We want a better mechanism where parents and teachers coordinate properly for the benefit of our children. When there is a problem in a school, let us follow the right procedures to resolve it,” he added.
Oyula cautioned residents against divisive politics, saying it undermines development gains in the constituency.
“We have initiated several projects in the education sector, including Butula KMTC and construction of dormitories in various schools. The national government is also investing in roads and markets. Let us embrace development-focused politics that address the needs of our people,” he said.
Butula Deputy County Commissioner Joseph Ng’eny noted that the Sub County has achieved a 98 per cent transition rate and is working to reach the remaining two per cent.
“The government directed us to ensure 100 per cent transition. We have reached 98 per cent and are working tirelessly to account for the remaining learners. Parents must support us by providing information about any child still out of school,” he said.
Ng’eny added that learners interested in technical training under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system should be supported.
“We had a case of a child who preferred joining a polytechnic instead of Grade 10. Such choices should not be discouraged because CBE promotes technical skills. We can make arrangements to ensure these children continue their studies in technical institutions,” he said.
Butula Sub County Director of Education Elizabeth Marangach expressed concern over low participation of fathers in school matters.
“There is a worrying trend where mostly mothers attend school meetings. Where are the fathers? Parenting is a shared responsibility. Let us all take part in our children’s education by engaging teachers and monitoring their progress,” she said.
Richard Ratemo, the principal St Peters Bumala B Secondary School, lauded the effort of the MP towards improving the infrastructure of the school.
“The institution has been experiencing a challenge of staffroom, but the new facility is going to give us a good time to administer at the school because of how well equipped it is.
The staffroom has enough space for the teachers and is well furnished with modern equipment for the use. I just want to call on parents to join hands with teachers, so that we can work together to better the education of our children in this school,” he said
