The Makueni county government has rolled out a mass registration exercise for Universal Health Care (UHC) cover across all the 390 clusters in the area.
Addressing the media Tuesday at the Makueni County Referral Hospital (MCRH), the County Executive for Health Services, Joyce Mutua said they were targeting to register 200,000 vulnerable people.
Consequently, the county government has set aside Sh90 million to fund the programme this financial year, where each of the 30 wards will get Sh3 million.
“We have a programme initiated by the county, which we call Makueni Universal Health Coverage (MUHC). It is a programme where we are going to identify vulnerable households to be covered under the social insurance fund,” said Mutua while briefing the media at the Makueni County hospital.
“This is ongoing activity in the 30 wards and we have even gone further to the 390 grassroots clusters, where registration will run from Tuesday 24 to Friday 27th February 2026,” she observed.
The County Executive further disclosed that the MUHC programme, which is being done in phases in order to accommodate as many eligible beneficiaries as possible will ultimately be implemented in close collaboration with the national Social Health Authority (SHA).
“Therefore I urge all Makueni residents to register with SHA through the Afya Yangu platform and update their of dependants records. To do this you will be expected to carry your national identification card, birth certificates for your children and a personal mobile phone,” said Mutua.
The county Executive said they will use proxy testing to identify the very vulnerable households, with a view to ensuring only the needy cases benefit from the programme.
On his part, the Chief Officer for Health Human Resource and Management Dr. Harvey Mulei said healthcare financing remains a costly undertaking, adding that the county government was committed to enhancing access to quality healthcare services.
“This programme will protect families from financial strains, effectively cushioning them from selling portions of their land to meet unforeseen medical expenses,” noted Dr. Mulei.
The Ag. County Chief Officer for Health Services Irene Makau also attended the function.
