The opening of the modern Kwale Stadium by President William Ruto during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held in Kwale County two years ago has opened up sporting opportunities for youths and elevated the county’s profile as a key sports destination in Kenya.
The state-of-the-art facility, which is the first of its kind in the Coast region, has a seating capacity of about 13,000 spectators and was constructed through a partnership between the national government and the Kwale County government.
Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani said the stadium has become a preferred venue for national football clubs and major league competitions due to its world-class standards.
“The stadium meets FIFA standards and has enabled Kwale County to host major sporting events, including the 2026 Mozzart Bet Cup and Kenya Premier League matches. Renowned clubs such as Bandari FC, Ulinzi Stars, Tusker FC, Kenya Police FC, and Bidco United have all utilized the facility,” said Achani.
The governor noted that the county government has complemented the investment by constructing 24 sports grounds across the county to promote talent development and steer young people away from drug and substance abuse.
“Our objective as a government is to expand access to quality sports infrastructure for talent development, recreation, and community participation across the county,” she added.
Achani urged youths in the county to take advantage of the available sports facilities to nurture their talents and pursue careers in sports.
Sports stakeholders in the county have lauded the construction of the stadium, saying it has created a platform for local athletes to compete at higher levels.
Kwale United coach Hamisi Masusa said the facility has inspired many young people to pursue sports professionally.
“This stadium has given our players an opportunity to compete at a higher level and dream bigger. It has inspired young people to pursue sports professionally, knowing they now have a world-class facility right here in Kwale,” said Masusa.
Residents Matano Mwinyi and Doni Mwema also commended the government’s investment in sports infrastructure, noting that the initiative will create employment opportunities and improve livelihoods among the youth.
“The government has demonstrated its commitment to improving the sports sector. Sports can provide sustainable livelihoods for many young people if they are given the right support and facilities,” said Mwinyi.
Kwale Stadium has continued to attract sporting activities from across the country, positioning Kwale County as an emerging hub for sports tourism and talent development at the coast.
