Residents of Isiolo have been urged to work closely with security agencies by sharing information that can help curb crime and enhance public safety in the town.
Speaking during a security meeting convened in Isiolo on Thursday, following the killing of a businesswoman by unknown assailants on Monday evening, Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo called on residents not to shield criminals but instead report them confidentially to the relevant authorities.
The senator said community cooperation with security and intelligence officers was crucial in combating crime, adding that public safety could only be achieved through collective responsibility.
She encouraged residents to volunteer information on drug dealers and peddlers and to report any security officer found soliciting bribes to protect criminals or compromising the confidentiality of whistleblowers.
“Residents should not fear providing information about suspects. There are several government offices where sensitive cases can be reported, especially if they are uncomfortable dealing directly with certain police officers,” she said.
Senator Dullo also pledged to lobby the government to construct decent housing for police officers in Isiolo, noting that many officers were living in dilapidated and condemned houses that could negatively affect their performance.
On the political front, she urged the business community not to be intimidated by politicians ahead of the forthcoming general election, saying they had the right to support leaders of their choice.
“Pay your taxes as required and demand quality public services without discrimination based on political or religious affiliation,” she said.
County Commissioner Mwachaunga Chaunga said the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews, drugs, and substance abuse had yielded positive results, with several illegal drinking dens shut down over the past three weeks.
He said a number of suspects had already been arraigned in court, adding that the operation would continue until the town was rid of illegal alcohol and drug trafficking.
The County Commissioner also announced that police patrols would be intensified to deal with armed criminals and improve security across the county.
He further disclosed that officers stationed at Isiolo Police Station would be transferred following complaints from members of the public over misconduct, saying the move was intended to restore public confidence in the security agencies.
Mr. Chaunga urged residents to report any junior officers suspected of leaking intelligence to criminals directly to senior security officials to ensure appropriate action is taken.
