Construction of a 340-capacity hostel at Nachu Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Nachu Ward, Kikuyu Constituency, Kiambu County, is underway in a Sh140 million project expected to ease student accommodation challenges and improve learners’ welfare.
The hostel is part of the government’s programme to develop modern student accommodation facilities in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country.
The programme is being implemented through the State Department for Housing and Urban Development to provide learners with safe, modern, and affordable accommodation within their institutions.
Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah said the facility would provide students with a conducive environment for learning while addressing accommodation challenges facing the institution.
“Once completed, the facility will provide safe, modern, and state-of-the-art accommodation within the institution, significantly improving students’ welfare and creating a more conducive environment for learning,” Ichung’wah said.
The development is expected to reduce students’ dependence on accommodation outside the college while enhancing their security and convenience.
Students who currently commute to the institution or seek private accommodation will have an opportunity to reside within the college once the hostel is completed.
Nachu TVC is a public technical and vocational training institution offering skills-based programmes aimed at equipping young people with practical competencies for employment and entrepreneurship.
The hostel is among the infrastructure investments being undertaken to support the expansion of TVET education, which the government has identified as an important pillar in addressing youth unemployment and meeting the growing demand for skilled workers.
Ichung’wah said the hostel would complement other development initiatives planned for the area, including improvements to the road network and healthcare infrastructure.
He said the road and hospital projects would improve access to essential services for residents of Nachu and surrounding areas, while the hostel would directly benefit students at the college.
The MP said improving infrastructure in learning institutions was important in creating an environment that encourages young people to pursue technical and vocational education.
Upon completion, the hostel will add 340 accommodation spaces to the college’s existing facilities, providing students with modern housing within the institution.
The project is also expected to ease pressure on private rental facilities around the college and reduce the time and costs associated with students commuting between their homes and the institution.
The development comes amid increased government efforts to strengthen TVET infrastructure and expand access to technical training across the country.
The Government has increasingly promoted technical and vocational training as a pathway for young people to acquire practical skills required in the labour market and create employment opportunities through entrepreneurship.
The hostel is therefore expected to make Nachu TVC more attractive to students while supporting the institution’s growth and capacity to train skilled workers.
Ichung’wah said the ongoing infrastructure investments would contribute to the overall development of Nachu Ward by improving access to education, healthcare, transport, and other essential services.
