The government plans to spend Sh20 billion to construct and upgrade 350 kilometres of roads in Nandi County in a major infrastructure investment expected to improve transport, boost agricultural production and stimulate economic growth.
President William Ruto announced the programme during his development tour of Tinderet Sub County, where he commissioned the Sh50 million Maraba Modern Market and broke ground for the construction of a new wing at Meteitei Sub County Hospital.
The President said the road development programme would improve connectivity across the county, ease the transportation of farm produce and open up rural areas to increased economic opportunities.
He highlighted the Timboroa-Kopere road, which is nearing completion, as one of the major infrastructure projects expected to transform transport in the region.
The road is expected to improve movement between agricultural production areas and markets, benefiting farmers, traders and other road users who depend on reliable transport networks to conduct their businesses.
Ruto also identified the Kebeneti-Maraba road in the Sub County as one of the routes targeted for development, raising expectations among residents who have long sought improved road connectivity to facilitate the movement of people and goods.
The President said investment in road infrastructure was central to the government’s development agenda, noting that better roads would stimulate trade, attract investment and improve access to essential services.
Nandi County is a major agricultural region where farmers depend on road networks to transport coffee, maize, sugarcane, dairy products and other commodities to markets and processing facilities.
“Improved roads are expected to reduce transportation challenges, facilitate access to agricultural inputs and enhance the competitiveness of local produce,” said the President.
The Kebeneti-Maraba road is expected to strengthen connections between residential areas, trading centres and public institutions while complementing other ongoing development initiatives.
The President’s visit also featured the commissioning of Maraba Modern Market, a facility expected to provide traders with improved working conditions and a more organized trading environment.
He further broke ground for the new wing at Meteitei Sub County Hospital as part of efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and improve access to medical services for residents.
“The investments in roads, markets and healthcare facilities underscore the government’s focus on infrastructure development as a means of improving livelihoods and promoting economic transformation at the grassroots level,” he said.
Residents and business operators are expected to benefit from improved transport networks, expanded trading opportunities and enhanced healthcare services as the projects are implemented.
The implementation of the road programme will be a key factor in determining how quickly communities across Nandi County realize the anticipated economic benefits.
