Ajiry Centre equips trainees with essential digital skills

Nestled in the heart of Nyahururu town, next to the Deputy County Commissioner’s office, the Laikipia Digital Hub (Ajiry Centre) stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity.

Since inception in March 2023 as a single class-training facility, the hub has quickly transformed into a powerhouse of digital empowerment, equipping individuals with essential skills for the modern world.

Under the leadership of Chief Officer Irumbi Kibara from the Department of Youth, Sports, Gender, Culture, and Social Services, the hub continues to drive innovation and skill development.

At the helm of operations is the Centre Manager Isaac Kiratu, ensuring seamless learning experiences, while Communication Specialist Jeremy Mwangangi amplifies the impact of the centre’s transformative initiatives.

The Laikipia County Digital Innovation Hub offers comprehensive training in Computer Literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Digital Literacy, covering essential skills such as Social Media Marketing, Graphic Design, Transcription, Content Writing, and Forex Trading.

Additionally, the programme emphasised on Finance Management, Personal Branding and Marketing, and Mental Health Awareness, equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the digital age.

“However, the vision soon expanded, and on December 7, 2023, the centre was officially launched by Laikipia County Governor Joshua Irungu, marking a new chapter in its educational journey,” pointed out Mwangangi.

Recognising the growing demand for digital proficiency, Mwangangi further said that Ajiry Centre introduced computer literacy and digital literacy training in January 2024.

Additionally, while partnering with Elimu Computer Centre, the institution now offers structured programmes to equip trainees with essential digital skills.

“Classes are well organised, with computer literacy sessions scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, while digital literacy takes place on Thursdays and Fridays,” he adds.

However, Mwangangi notes that the centre doesn’t just focus on technical skills; it also emphasises soft skills such as communication, critical thinking, and decision-making.

He further notes that in order to foster these abilities, a part-time life skills programme has been introduced, ensuring that trainees are not only job-ready but also equipped with the confidence to navigate their careers successfully.

Ajiry Centre has also made significant strides in infrastructure. A fully equipped studio for podcasting and show rehearsals has been established, providing trainees with hands-on experience in media production. This development is part of a broader effort to create diverse learning opportunities within the institution.

The impact of Ajiry Centre’s work is evident in its growing student population. Notably, last year in August 2024, nearly 1,000 students graduated from the Rumuruti headquarters, a testament to the centre’s success in delivering quality training.

Mwangangi points out that this year, 370 students have registered, with 90 students attending each session.

Nevertheless, despite these achievements, Mwangangi notes that the centre is facing some challenges with no digital hub opened yet, but, however, adds that a partnership with Tribus Kenya aims to expand training facilities to include a modern digital hub.

“Both the national and county governments are also working on increasing training tuition and expanding classroom spaces to accommodate more students and prevent delays in enrolment,” he adds.

The communication specialist highlights the inclusivity of the institution, emphasising that Ajiry Centre welcomes anyone willing to learn, regardless of age.

However, he urges the government to step in and improve training facilities, particularly by expanding classrooms and providing essential resources such as cameras for practical training.

One of the most inspiring stories from the centre is that of Mr. Joram Nderitu, the eldest trainee.

Expressing his gratitude for being accommodated in January 2025, he praises the centre for its well-organised structure and engaging participation. His story is a testament to the institution’s commitment to lifelong learning.

Ajiry Centre continues to spread its message through formal channels such as posters and letters to the public and churches in Nyahururu township, coupled with dedicated leadership and support from stakeholders like Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu and other county officials.

As the centre strives to bridge the digital divide and empower more individuals with critical skills, one thing remains clear: Ajiry Centre is not just a training institution—it is a catalyst for change, shaping a new generation of skilled, confident, and tech-savvy individuals ready to take on the world.

As the County Government’s Digital Innovation Hub (Ajiry Centre) continues to empower individuals and close the digital gap, one thing is clear—it is more than just a training institution. It is a launching pad for visionaries, a hub of endless possibilities, and a catalyst for transformation, shaping a generation of skilled, confident, and tech-savvy trailblazers.

Mwangangi says the doors are open to creators, artists, and learners alike: “If you have a passion for podcasting, come record your content for free and let your voice be heard. Aspiring musicians can step into the studio—just like Koppa Gekon, who recorded My Butterfly, God is One, and the sensational hit Calendar ya Mungu, all produced by Producer Antony Tjay & Felix at the Hub. And for those eager to sharpen their computer skills, registration is ongoing, with March and April intakes now open.”

“The future belongs to those who dare to dream and take action. At the Digital Innovation Hub, we believe in you. Step in, learn, create, and transform your passion into something extraordinary. Laikipia’s youth are the driving force of innovation—this is your time to shine!” concludes Mwangangi.
