Murang’a Catholic Diocese Bishop, Rt. Rev. James Maria Wainaina, has called on university students to remain united, grow in holiness, and support one another in faith as they navigate the challenges of modern life.
The bishop was speaking at his residence in Murang’a where he celebrated a thanksgiving Mass with the Catholic Diocese of Murang’a Kenyatta University Evangelization Team (CDMKUET), a group of young professionals and Kenyatta University alumni marking 15 years of existence.
He urged young people in universities and colleges to remain steadfast in their faith both inside and outside learning institutions so that they can assist one another grow while also supporting their dioceses.
“I invite you to take inspiration from John the Baptist, who fearlessly announced Jesus in every direction and dimension, even in the face of challenges. John’s character shines as an example for us, for he was truthful, courageous, humble, and committed to living a holy life,” he said.
The bishop emphasized that young people in universities are not only learners but also missionaries of the Gospel in their daily lives.
“As Christians, we too are called to holiness and dedication so that our lives may proclaim Christ to the world. The greatness of any action is not measured by its size, but by the fruits it bears,” he added.
Bishop Wainaina challenged the youth to embrace their role as “pilgrims of hope” in a society often clouded by despair and moral confusion.
“You, the youth in our universities, are pilgrims of hope. Carry Christ with you into your studies, friendships, and future professions. Do not be afraid to stand out for the truth and shine as light in places of darkness,” he urged.
He further encouraged them to be bold in their witness.
“May our mission always be to let others encounter the salvation of Jesus Christ through both our words and actions. Do not allow peer pressure or modern trends to dim your faith. Instead, lead with integrity, humility, and courage,” he said.
The bishop lauded CDMKUET for their commitment, reminding them that evangelization is not only the duty of priests and religious leaders but of every Christian.
“You have shown that evangelization is for all. As professionals in different fields, you remain a resource for our diocese and beyond. Your presence in universities and in society is a gift. Be witnesses of faith, joy, and hope wherever you go,” Bishop Wainaina said.
Members of the group expressed gratitude for reaching the milestone and pledged to continue evangelizing. Chairperson Dickson Maina urged young people in universities to join faith groups to nurture their spiritual lives.
“We encourage youth to join groups that will help them grow in faith and also be good role models in society,” he said.
Another member, Wilson Ng’ang’a, noted that despite members pursuing different careers, the group’s bond has remained strong for 15 years.
“We are professionals from different parishes brought together by faith. We thank God for 15 years of existence. We ask the youth to unite and be strong evangelizers of the gospel of truth, especially now when the country is facing many challenges. We are the ones to drive our country forward,” he said.
