Chuka University has received a major boost in its quest to advance food security research, after 42 students were awarded scholarships under the World Bank–supported Food Systems and Resilience Programme.
The beneficiaries include 15 PhD candidates and 27 Masters students.
Each PhD student will receive Sh1.5 million, while Master’s students will get Sh1 million to support their research.
According to the University Vice Chancellor Professor Henry Mutembei, the programme launched in 2019 and presented to the World Bank, is the first of its kind at Chuka University.
He said the programme aims at strengthening innovation, research, and practical solutions in agriculture while addressing food security and climate resilience in Kenya and beyond.
“This is a very crucial programme to the institution and the country at large as it will help us in addressing issues of food security which has been a thorn in the flesh in Kenya,” said Professor Mutembei.
In addition to financial support, Professor Mutembei added, the scholars will undergo structured induction, academic mentorship, and quarterly monitoring.
They will also benefit from coaching, scientific conferences, and professional exchanges.
Professor Mutembei who chairs the Scholarships Technical Committee of the FSRP Project, added that the initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader food security and agricultural transformation strategies.
He urged the students to seize the golden opportunity to complete their projects on time and graduate without delays.
“This programme goes beyond scholarships. It is offering students opportunities to conduct meaningful research that can transform communities,” said Professor Mutembei.
He described it as a turning point for Chuka University, positioning the institution as a hub for research and innovation that directly responds to society’s most pressing challenges.
