Emuhaya Level 4 Hospital board charts development agenda to strengthen UHC

The Vihiga County Department of Health Services has reaffirmed its commitment to improving healthcare delivery following a board meeting held at Emuhaya Sub-County Hospital to discuss the facility’s development agenda after its recent elevation to Level 4 status.

Speaking during the meeting, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services Dr. Nicholas Kitungulu, accompanied by Chief Officer for Health Services Dr. Mary Anyiendah, said the county government is focused on strengthening healthcare systems to accelerate the realization of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Dr. Kitungulu said the hospital’s elevation to Level 4 presents an opportunity to expand access to quality and specialized healthcare services for residents of Emuhaya, Luanda and the wider Vihiga County.

The board deliberated on several key areas aimed at improving the hospital’s performance and sustainability, including the review of the hospital’s Strategic Plan, implementation of the Vihiga County Facility Improvement Financing Act, 2022, operationalization of healthcare services following the hospital’s upgrade, and strategies to enhance internal revenue generation.

The meeting noted that successful implementation of the Facility Improvement Financing Act will strengthen financial management at the facility by enabling the hospital to retain and utilize part of the revenue it generates to improve service delivery, procure essential medical supplies, and support operational needs.

Members also discussed measures to ensure the smooth operationalization of services at the newly elevated Level 4 hospital, including strengthening human resources, expanding specialized medical services, improving healthcare infrastructure, and enhancing the availability of essential equipment.

The board emphasized the need to increase locally generated revenue to support quality healthcare services while ensuring that medical care remains affordable and accessible to residents.

“The recent elevation of Emuhaya Sub County Hospital to Level 4 marks a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and bring specialized medical services closer to the people,” remarked Dr. Kitungulu.

He added the upgrade is expected to improve patient care through increased staffing capacity, enhanced medical infrastructure, expanded diagnostic and treatment services, and better access to comprehensive healthcare, advancing Vihiga County’s commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage.

The county government reiterated its commitment to working closely with the hospital board and other stakeholders to ensure the facility delivers efficient, high-quality healthcare services that meet the growing needs of the population.
