People’s Liberation Party (PLP) Leader, Martha Karua, has condemned the growing trend of human rights violations in the country in the form of extra judicial killings and abductions, she alleged, were being carried out by the police.
Speaking in Embu Town, Thursday, during a meeting with women grassroots leaders in reference to the latest incident of the abduction of Standard Group Associate Editor, Alex Kiptotich, Karua said the surge in political intolerance mirrors authoritarian practices by the Kenya Kwanza (KK)Regime.
She accused the government of ignoring and downplaying these human rights violations cases, terming it as a recipe for chaos that threatens to destabilize the country’s democracy.
“The police pretend not to know about these cases, yet we know that the abduction squad is from the police,” she stated, adding that Kenyans have had enough of these violations of human rights.
She said this was the reason the united opposition coalition, was pushing for a regime change to end these systematic human rights violations, police brutality and state-sponsored abductions.
“We need a government that respects the people, their lives and their rights and we are, therefore, telling the KK regime that their days are numbered. Kenyans will not tolerate this kind of thing,” she said.
On integrity of votes, Karua told-off leaders from the government side who have been talking of rigging the 2027 elections, saying that the opposition was equally prepared to vote and guard their votes.
“We are telling those who have been talking of rigging that the practice ended with Ol-Kalou. We will vote and guard out votes,” she stated.
She also called on voters not to equate leadership with money, saying that leadership should be measured by capability, track record and integrity and not financial status.
“We do not need handouts but services,” she said, adding that the culture of handouts only offered temporary relief while leaving national needs unresolved.
